When a ball lies in a penalty area, the ball can be played as it lies or there are relief options.
Play the ball as it lies;
– You can now remove loose impediments, take practice swings and ground your club in a penalty area.
Relief options with one stroke penalty;
– Stroke and distance – replaying the shot from point where the previous stroke was made
– Back-on-line-relief, based on a reference line from where the ball last crossed the margin of the penalty area and the flagstick
– Two club lengths from where the ball is estimated to have last crossed the margin of the penalty area (not necessarily point of entry, as the ball may cross the area and then roll back in) and no nearer the hole
